Phillips Exeter
Academy Library
New Hampshire
1965—1972

Louis Kahn designed the Phillips Exeter Academy Library to resemble a cube. The innovative design diffuses and directs the daylight that floods the space from the center, top and four sides of the building.

Louis Kahn said, “And every time I’ve thought of eternity, I’ve thought of looking up”. The massive ceiling structure enables us to understand how the architecture works here. The rays of the sun shine on the concrete surface and a soft spiritual light fills the space where people come to read books.
