With his powerful and poetic buildings, Louis I. Kahn (1901–1974) influenced generations of architects. ETH Zurich presented the first comprehensive exhibition of his work in 1969. At the opening on February 12, Kahn delivered his now-famous lecture ""Silence and Light"": a manifesto of his spiritual understanding of architecture. For Kahn, the mathematically measurable was merely a means; the architect was also a ""servant of the immeasurable."" He was concerned with the fundamental, with silence and light, and he not only relied on timeless ""means such as walls, pillars, vaults, squares, circles, pyramids, prisms, and cylinders,"" as the architect and ETH professor Bernhard Hoesli wrote, but imbued them with such a new effect that it was as if he had ""coined them for the first time.""
This bibliophile book presents Louis I. Kahn's lecture in the original English, in several translations and on audio CD with an introduction by Bernhard Hoesli and a prologue by the Indian architect Balkrishna V. Doshi, who worked with Kahn for a long time.
